Across the former Yugoslavia supporters and die-hard fans of Josip Broz Tito paid tribute Tuesday to the leader on the 30th anniversary of his death.

On the anniversary of his death the museum gets an average of eight delegations an hour from all over the former Yugoslavia. A woman in her 60s, who would not give her name, started crying when telling AFP what Tito meant to her. “I wish he could stand up from there and bring back the good old times,” she said. “Everything that he had given to us has been destroyed by the people who inherited it.”

After Tito’s death in 1980 the Yugoslav state he came to symbolize quickly crumbled. A decade after his demise, a series of bloody wars tore the former Yugoslavia apart leaving the constituent republics as small independent states. more…

BELGRADE, Serbia—The Davis Cup run for the United States is over in the first round.

Novak Djokovic withstood 24 aces and outlasted John Isner 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-4 on Sunday, giving Serbia a clinching 3-1 lead against an American team looking for its 33rd Davis Cup title. In the last rubber, Sam Querrey beat Viktor Troicki 7-5, 6-2 to make the final score 3-2.

It’s the first time since 2005 the Americans were eliminated in the first round, while Serbia advances for the first time in the World Group and next plays bitter Balkan rival Croatia in the quarterfinals.  More…
